Class 4 – Advanced Performance Tuning

Session #1: Plan Caching Deep Dive

Plan Caching is the most powerful concept in SQL Server. But on the other hand it's also the most dangerous thing that can lead to queries that are executed with a completely wrong Execution Plan.

In this deep dive session we will have a more detailed look into the Plan Cache of SQL Server, in which different ways SQL Server can cache Execution Plans in the Plan Cache, and how you can troubleshooting wrong performing queries directly from the Plan Cache. We will cover:

  • Plan Cache.
  • Ad-Hoc Query Caching.
  • Auto Parametrization.
  • Forced Parametrization.
  • Query Hash Analysis.
  • Parameter Sniffing.

Session #2: Advanced Performance Troubleshooting

It's Friday, 05:00pm. You are just receiving an email that informs you that your SQL Server has enormous performance problems! What can you do? How can you identify the problem and resolve it fast? Which “problem areas” you can encounter in SQL Server?.

In this session you will see a lot of different tools and how you can do effective SQL Server troubleshooting with them. You will learn how to identify performance bottlenecks, and how to resolve the identified bottlenecks. We will cover:

  • Wait Statistics.
  • System Health Ring Buffers.
  • Memory Management.
  • Query Memory.
  • Query Hash Analysis.
  • I/O Issues.

This course is level 200 - 300 and is targeted.
